Saturday, January 6: Laurel Mountain Ridge Trail
Rating: strenuous. An approx. 10.5 mile loop
with over 2000 ft. elevation change. We will follow
this ridge trail up the shoulder of Laurel Mountain
with views of the North Mills River valley. We will
descend via the Thompson Ridge trail through groves
of laurel and chestnut. Limit: 10. Leader: Alice

Sunday, January 14: South Mountains State Park
9.2 miles of moderate hiking in South Mountains
State Park. We'll go up to Chestnut Knob for views
of the surrounding Piedmont country, and follow a
loop along the Shinny Trail to check out the 80 foot
High Shoals Falls. Limit: 10 Leader: Allan

Saturday, Feb. 10: Doughton Park
Rating: moderately strenuous. Limit: 10. A 9 mile
hike along a ridge trail with great views of the
surrounding area ascending to the Brinegar cabin on
the Blue Ridge Parkway. Leader: Alice Howren

Sunday, Feb. 18 and Wed, Feb. 28:
Weather permitting we will hike up to 5 miles. Some
options are easy hikes and some are moderate.
Possible hikes include McDowell Nature Preserve
and Ribbon Walk in Charlotte, NC, and
Cowpens National Battlefield in SC. Decision to
be made by the previous Friday. Leader: Emilie

Sunday, February 18: Hanging Rock State Park
Moderate to Strenuous. A 8.0 mile combination hike
of the Cook's and Moore's Walls Trails in Hanging
Rock State Park. We will tiptoe around the tops of
these 2500 foot high rocky cliffs for a good look at
the surrounding Piedmont countryside and the Blue
Ridge Mountains. Limit: 12. Leader: Allan Rosenfeld,

Saturday, March 10: Pilot Mountain
Rating: Moderately strenuous. Limit: 10. A 9 mile
loop with appr. 1900 ft. elevation gain. We will
follow the Art Loab trail to the top of Pilot Mtn.
for spectacular views of the surrounding area, then
descend through hardwoods to Farlow Gap and return
via the Farlow Gap and Daniel Ridge trails with a
stop at the Shuck Ridge Creek waterfall. Leader:

Sunday, March 18: Landsford Canal State Park, SC
An easy 4-5 mile hike by the Catawba River. Learn
about the canal and hopefully see early wildflowers.

Sunday, March 25: Linville Gorge
This 7.4 mile strenuous loop hike in the Linville
Gorge begins at the Conley Cove trailhead. We will
spend the day exploring the gorge, and climb up to
the top of Babel Tower for a great picnic perch.

Sunday, March 25: Devil's Fork State Park, SC,
and Station Falls, SC
Hopefully see early wildflowers on 2 short hikes and
lunch by Lake Jocassee. Limit:15. Leader: Emilie

Saturday, April 7: Pisgah Forest: Avery Creek
area
Rating: strenuous. Limit: 10. A 10 mile loop
following several ridge line trails for views of
Looking Glass and Pilot Mountains and the Avery
Creek drainage area. We will follow the Perry Cove,
Bennett Gap, and Buckwheat Knob trails to Club Gap
and then follow the Black Mountain trail over
Clawhammer and Black Mountains. Leader: Alice Howren

Sunday, April 22: Shining Rock
Strenuous. A 2600 foot climb to the top of Shining
Rock via the Shining Creek trail, following the
North Prong of Shining Creek with its lovely series
of cascades. We'll finish the 8.4 mile loop
returning on the Old Butt Knob trail, with great
opportunities to enjoy the leaf foliage. Limit: 10.

Saturday, April 28: Linville Gorge
Rating: moderately strenuous. Limit: 10. An approx.
9 mile loop on the east side of the gorge following
the Spence Ridge trail down to the river and
returning via the Little Table Rock trail and
ascending to the top of Table Rock Mountain with a
side trip to The Chimneys area of the gorge. Great
views of the surrounding countryside and a chance
for wildflowers in bloom. Leader: Alice Howren

Sunday, April 29: Green River Cove Trail
Hike 5-7 moderate miles among wildflowers and tall
trees with views of the Green River. One of my
favorite places. Leader: Emilie Booker

Sunday, May 6: Sam's Gap/Bald Mountains
Rating: moderately strenuous. A 13.6 mile dayhike on
the Appalachian Trail from Sams Gap up the Bald
Mountains and back. We'll see spring flowers on the
way to crossing Big Bald with its 5500' high meadow
and vistas of the Smokies and Mt. Mitchell. Limit:

Saturday, May 12: Rock Castle Gorge
Rating: strenuous. An 11 mile loop descending into
the Rock Castle Gorge area of southern Virginia.
With numerous outstanding features and lush plant
life, this trail has been designated a National
Scenic Trail. Limit: 10. Leader: Alice Howren,

Saturday, June 16: Grayson Highlands State Park
Rating: strenuous. An 11 mile loop starting at
Massie Gap and following sections of the AT through
2 wilderness areas and a national recreation area.
Enjoy panoramic views, quiet forest trails and wild
ponies.

Saturday, July 7: Mt. Sterling
Rating; very strenuous. This classic Smokies climb
is a very strenuous (4100 ft. elevation gain) 12.4
mile hike up to the top of Mt. Sterling on the
Baxter Creek Trail. Your reward: an airy lunch stop
with 360 degree views from the summit's fire tower.

Saturday, July 21: Hump Mountain
Rating: strenuous. A 9 mile trip with over 2000 feet
elevation change starting at Yellow Mountain Gap and
following the AT across Big Yellow Mountain and to
the top of Hump Mountain. Enjoy lush forests and
grassy balds with superb views of the surrounding

Shining Rock Wilderness Area
Rating: moderately strenuous. An 8.5 mile route
following sections of the Art Loab trail to Shining
Rock, through Flower Gap, and across Black Balsam
and Tennent mountains This trail has a lot of open
grassy areas with superb views of the surrounding
area and the blueberries should be ready to pick
this time of year. Limit: 10. Leader: Alice Howren,

Saturday, Sept.22:
Black Mountain Crest Trail
Rating: strenuous. An 8 mile round trip over rocky
terrain that traverses five peaks over 6000 feet,
ending at Deep Gap. We will enjoy spectacular views
as well as forests of spruce and fir. Limit: 10.

Saturday, Oct. 20:
Sam's Knob
Rating: Moderately strenuous. Limit: 10. An 8-9
mile loop in Shining Rock Wilderness area with great
views of the surrounding area from Devil's
Courthouse and Sam's Knob. Hopefully we will catch

Cook's and Moore's Walls Trails
Rating: moderately strenuous. We will take an 8 mile
hike on the Cook's and Moore's Walls Trails in
Hanging Rock State Park. We'll tiptoe around the
tops of these 2500 foot hight rocky cliffs for a
good look at the surrounding Piedmont countryside
and the Blue Ridge Mountains. This hike is limited

Old Butt Knob-Shining Rock Wilderness area
Rating: strenuous. An 8.0 mile loop ascending
Old Butt Knob trail along Chestnut Ridge, through
Spanish Oak Gap, over Dog Loser Knob and arriving at
Shining Rock for spectacular views of the
surrounding mountains. We will descend via the
Shining Creek trail through forest of hemlocks and
mixed hardwoods. Elevation change of 2600 feet.

Mt. Rogers
Rating: moderately strenuous. An 8.5 mile trip
to the highest point in Virginia via the AT. Enjoy

moderate to strenuous hike on the Flat Rock Ridge
Trail in Doughton Park (an easy 2
hour drive). Stop for lunch and scenery at old
