The Dirty Truth About Coal and Coal Ash in North Carolina
The Riverbend Steam Station, which has two of the EPA top 44 high hazard ash ponds,is located on Mountain Island Lake, which is the primary source of drinking water for approximately 750,000 people (Source: Catawba Riverkeeper).
Right now communities across the country are exposed to heavy metals such as arsenic, lead and mercury when hazardous materials from coal ash disposal sites seep into our drinking water. The result — increased risk of cancer, learning disabilities, birth defects and other illnesses. Since the EPA has selected Charlotte for a Public Hearing on Tuesday, September 14th, we need to be ready to stand up to industry pressure and show that Mecklenburg and citizens in the surrounding counties want strong safeguards.
Join the Central Piedmont Sierra Club for an important meeting on “The Dirty Truth About Coal and Coal Ash in North Carolina“. We’ll learn about the impact of coal and coal ash on the Mecklenburg region and NC. We’ll also learn about how to be an effective advocate on issues such as this – make public comments or write letters.
